Aspen Institute VP Maureen Conway, blogging on July 4, 2023, American Independence Day, argues that “America cannot truly be the Land of the Free until we liberate its working people and enable them to enjoy the fruits of their labor. This can only be accomplished by improving the quality of their jobs.” She points to three priorities: measuring job quality rigorously and consistently in any assessment of the economy, ensuring worker voice through the right to join labour unions, and creating more opportunities for employees to own the companies in which they work. Conway concludes: “If we want to reduce poverty, expand human freedom in the US, and ensure an inclusive economy, then we need to transform America’s jobs so that all jobs are good jobs.
