Improving Job Quality in the Services Sector

Harvard economist Dani Rodrik’s latest book, Shared Prosperity in a Fractured World, argues that improving the quality of jobs in the services sector should be a priority for developing and advanced economies alike. As one reviewer wrote: “Rodrik is most convincing when he identifies a misguided fixation on manufacturing jobs as a costly mistake, in advanced and developing economies alike. The future, he argues convincingly, lies in enabling workers to take up well-paying jobs in services. To get there, Rodrik advocates a host of micro-level state interventions already proven to work, as illustrated by compelling examples from a public-private partnership in western Michigan to vegetable sellers in Colombia’s Bogotá. Throughout the book, he emphasizes experimentation over grand design and local over national—let alone global—solutions.” To access the full review, click HERE
