Why a gender lens is needed for the Covid-19 response

The Gavi Alliance, co-founded by the Gates Foundation, UNICEF and the World Health Organization, has immunized 760 million children in the world’s poorest countries, preventing 13 million deaths (see www.gavi.org).  Gavi recently published a paper entitled :Why a gender lens is needed for the Covid-19 response,” noting the pandemic tens to kill more men than women but that women disproportionately assume the burden of care for the community, that domestic violence against women has risen during the crisis, and that the pandemic has resulted in women being denied access to reproductive and health services. “The Covid-19 response must be human rights centered. The global health community needs to learn from past outbreaks, and rather than only apply retrospective hindsight to Covid-19, instead try to get ahead of these gendered consequences to protect the most disadvantaged, discriminated and vulnerable communities.” Read more here
