Implementation of the Rural Bittaheen Institution Project, Bangladesh

Overview

In this series of projects sponsored by CIDA and the Bangladesh Rural Development Board (BRDB), Jackson and Associates managed a large team of local professionals with expertise in rural development, cooperatives, micro-credit, gender equality and financial management.

Results

The team supported the BRDB to improve the effectiveness of a nationwide rural credit program involving 16,000 local cooperatives. Toward the end of the period, the team worked with policymakers and politicians to convert the program into a stand-alone microfinance institution serving rural communities.  National legislation was enacted to establish the new institution.

The project was praised by government Ministers in Bangladesh and Canada and an award-winning film documentary, A Solid Foundation for Change, was produced on the experience.
